Drilling on Depot Street Bridge Next Week

I hope everyone has had an opportunity to read Betsy Thurston’s inaugural post on our brand-new blog highlighting the bridges of Bellows Falls and Rockingham.

During the next two years Betsy will explore, in text and photographs, the history of the downtown bridges as well as that of Bellows Falls Island and the canal.

A Construction Update

Sooner than expected, we have an update related to construction of the new vehicular and pedestrian bridges that will replace the 114-year-old Depot Street Bridge starting in 2025.

To acquire additional information on the existing concrete arch bridge’s foundation, VTrans has hired a contractor to perform subsurface drilling at the intersection of Canal Street and Depot Street and at the end of the concrete arch on Depot Street by the sewer pump station.

Daytime Closure of Depot Street Bridge

Starting on Monday, June 19, the Depot Street Bridge will be closed between 7 AM and 5 PM. Canal Street will remain open with flaggers directing traffic. The two parking spaces just south of the Depot Street Bridge on Canal Street will be closed for use by the contractor.

The work is expected to take approximately two weeks. No work will be performed at night, on the weekends, or on Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and 4.

Between pneumatic drilling and a vac truck, which is used to excavate material from the borings, there will be some noise during this daytime operation. All holes resulting from the borings will be refilled and capped with either cold patch pavement or concrete to allow vehicles and pedestrians to drive and walk over them safely once the work is completed.

Let me know if you have questions or concerns and I’ll do my best to address them.
